Today, we're going to learn eight Expressions that are a little bit more advanced than simply saying to get something. We're going to talk about the verb "get". The verb "get" now is used a little too often in a business situation. You can change this verb into a more interesting and different verb or expressions that you could use instead of saying "get" all the time. These lessons are all designed to help
you upgrade your English so that you
sound more professional in a business
context.
1. To get a job / To land the job
If you say to get a job
it's not wrong. We're trying to do
here is to raise your level or to take
you to a higher level. These are not
wrong they're just basic for those of you who want to learn business
English and want to know what's the
difference between regular English and
business English. Well sometimes it's in
the level of vocabulary. Instead of saying to get a job you could use the expression "to land the
job" this is obviously in the present tense but you can change
it to use it in the past if you need to.
2. To get the deal / To clinch the deal
Instead of say to get the deal you
could say to clinch the deal. To
clinch the deal means the same thing as
to get the deal but it's a more
expressive word.
3. To get permission / To obtain permission
Sometimes you need to get
permission to do something, what
expression could we use instead of to say that? You could say to obtain permission. To obtain permission is more
formal even
in a business context. You might
see this written down in a form or in
rules or regulations in order to obtain
permission or a form that you need to fill out.
4. To get access / To gain access
To get access something means to be able to reach something
such as information or some files
or something else. Instead of
saying to get access you could say
to gain access. For example "how can I gain access to
their site"" or "...to this document?" or .... to this information?" You learn these by saying
them by writing and using them in your own sentence.
5. To get the benefits / To enjoy the benefits
Instead of saying to get the benefits we use different expressions that is more popular it is enjoy the benefits.
6. To get support / To win support
You could get support of your employees, team, and manager but
instead of saying "I need to get support" or "get their support" you could say "I need
to win support" or "to win their support". That's another interesting word and it makes life a little more
interesting also it shows that you have
a more extensive vocabulary that you can
express yourself more professionally.
7. To get respect / To earn respect
Everybody wants to get respect from
their colleagues, family, employer, or manager. But instead of saying to get respect we
could say to
earn respect. To earn respect that means it's not
usually respect that just given but you
have to do a number of things in order
to earn that respect just like we have
to work hard to earn money.
8. To get a call / To receive a call
It is a very common expression such as "I got a call I" , "....got an email I", "...got
a package". You can say that if
you're just talking even if you're in
the office but if
you want to be a little bit more formal
you can say "I received a call", "I received
an email" or "I received your package". If you're asking a question or writing an email probably you don't
want to say "did you get my email?" you
could say "did you receive my email?"
That's all eight Expressions that are a little bit more advanced than simply saying to get something. I'm sure you will enjoy the benefits of your hard work and your investment. See you.
